Certainly there are people in this world that enjoy working out and there are people that are natural born athletically skilled individuals. Just as there are millions of people who absolutely hate working out, there are a similar number of those that are constantly moving, always in pursuit of the perfect body and always looking their best. While the ones that hate exercise may have a weight issue on their hands, there can also be an issue with the ones that seem to be doing the right thing by exercising an awful lot. Is it possible to exercise too much?
It is a nice thought to picture while you are running those last few steps on a treadmill that you are doing the right thing, getting in shape and keeping your body healthy by exercising. The problem lies within those that are doing too much of a good thing. Exercise without a doubt is a fantastic way to avoid illnesses and extend your lifespan dramatically. However, when you engage in too much of it there can be other consequences to doing so. Over exercising and over training the body generally occurs when you are training everyday or when you are training too much on the days that you are exercising. This could mean you only workout three days per week, but on those three days you are pushing your body to train for hours at a time it may simply be too much to handle.
If you have been running everyday for an hour in the morning for seven years, you most likely are not over training your body and your body not only becomes used to the activity, but it craves it when you take a day off from it. Those type of people are not over training their bodies. If you have begun working out with weights and doing cardio activities four or five days a week and each day it is hours long, or you feel you are pushing your body to finish the workouts then you are definitely over training your body. If your muscles feel stiff, sore or tender for days then you have over trained them. It is common to feel soreness when you begin a new routine or when you have not worked out in some time and then you begin to pick it back up as they will need time to get back into it. When you have been working out for weeks and they still feel sore then you need to cut back a little bit. Muscles need rest and many people that are trying to lose weight quickly or need to be involved in a particular athletic event soon tend to over do it to make their deadline. Always try to give yourself enough time prior to your deadline to get those resting times in between. Weight lifting should not be done everyday, it will not only cause your muscles to become sore, but they will stop gaining size so rapidly because they become immune to the workouts and they will be tired and need a day off. Take a day off in between weight training and eat a lot of protein and healthy carbohydrates to keep the body properly fueled to stay at your peak conditioning point.
